Nacionalinė knygų premija (angl. National Book Award) buvo įsteigta 1950 metais. Ją įsteigė Amerikos knygų leidėjų taryba, Knygų leidybos institutas ir Amerikos knygų prekybininkų asociacija. 1980–1986 metais buvo vadinama Amerikos knygų premija, 1987 metais premija vėl atgavo pirmykštį pavadinimą. Premijos teikimą nuo 1989 metų perėmė Nacionalinis knygų fondas. Premiją sudaro 10 000 USD. 1964–1980 m. nominacijoms buvo pristatomos trys knygų kategorijos – dalykinė knyga, beletristika, poezija, o vėliau išaugo iki 26. 1984 m. Nacionalinės knygų premijos apdovanojimų skaičius buvo suskirstytas į dvi kategorijas: beletristiką ir dalykinę literatūrą. Poezijos kūriniai vėl pristatomi nominacijai tik nuo 1991 m. Apdovanoti gali būti tik praeitų metų kūriniai, sukurti dar gyvenančiųjų valstybės piliečių. Trijų apdovanojimų – už beletristiką, dalykinę knygą ir poeziją – vertas knygas atrenka trys komisijos nariai.
