Vandet ligger til at begynde med i den øverste beholder A, herfra løber vandet ned igennem det hule ben B, igennem bøjningen C, og danner et lille springvand ved F. Vandet samles herefter i renden D, løber ned igennem røret E, og samles i A'. Den fortrængte luft i A' løber igennem det andet hule ben og presser mere vand ud. Processen kan gentages ved at vende uret om.

At the beginning the water is in the top container A, from here it runs down inside the hollow leg B, through the bend C, and forming a little fountain at F. The water is collected at D, where it runs down in the pipe E, and are collected in A'. The process can be repeated by turning the clock upside-down.
