English: Nihonto (traditional Japanese (steel) bladed weapons)): A Yari (spear); close up of the spearhead, mounted in a shirasaya; the blade is a simple (classic) 3-sided (triangular in cross-section) single tip yari, approximately 1 shaku (roughly 1 ft) in length (which is intermediate/moderately-long for a simple-form single point yari) with a groove & character inscribed & detailed with red laquer, on the "front". NTHK certified, 1500s-1600s, from my personal collection. This shot shows the "front" side of the yari blade; a single flat surface. the blade is hand-tempered along its full length on the 2 cutting edges, which look "fogged" or "frosted" as compared with the rest of the steel. The blade has been polished, within the last few years, to a reasonable show quality, although it is in need of cleaning & oiling. When examined in detail, the blade shows minor scratches from post-polish use, & both grain details & minor flaws in the steel, as would be expected of a pre-modern (or traditionally made) Japanese blade; especially a thick-bladed weapon, intended for practical, everyday use. |

i wasn't planning on it, & for the most part, i was trying to minimize glare from the flash, but this is the shot with the prettiest "flare".
this is the original "as-is" photo9graph; it has not been retouched to enhance the lighting, or for any other reasons (if you shoot enough pictures of something, sometimes you get lucky... ).
image could be cleaned up in a number of ways, such as rotating to a more perfect vertical, cropping slightly, & toning down the bg.
