Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. **All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be very low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)**

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!!

Thanks!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Pala, pala.

Tad man dabar nieko kito nelieka, tik man savąją nuotrauką pašalinti. --Stanislovas01 (aptarimas) 00:26, 3 vasario 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

Man asmeniškai jos abi atrodo visai tinkamos. --Nomad (aptarimas) 00:40, 3 vasario 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally.

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

I want to be kept up to date about Wikidata

To stay up-to-date on everything happening around Wikidata please subscribe to the newsletter that is delivered weekly to subscribed user’s talk pages. You can see previous editions here.

Lygtai nematau mūsiškėje viki šablono „Trūksta foto“ (iliustracijos, lentelės, žemėlapio,...). Jį įdiegus, gal būtų galima pamažinti pilkų, grynai tekstinių straipsnių kiekį. Pvz.: en:Template:Image requested ar ru:Шаблон:Нет иллюстрации--Vilensija (aptarimas) 02:11, 4 kovo 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

Updating the logo for this wiki

New logo

Hello! As part of the update of Wikipedias logos to the new (2010) 3D puzzle globe version, we have noticed that your wiki's current logo is missing, outdated or with wrong translation. We are trying to help Wikipedias get a locally-adapted correct logo, by taking the technical difficulties on us, and in about a week from now we'll be replacing the current logo with the new one shown in this gallery, with explanation. If the translation is wrong, or there's another error in the new logo, or the community disagrees with the update, please update the list of logos or tell us on its talk. Feel free to translate this message and to move/copy/forward it where appropriate. Thanks, Nemo 15:42, 11 kovo 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

(Please consider translating this message for the benefit of your fellow Wikimedians)

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

If you'd like to learn about this kind of events earlier in advance, consider becoming a Tech ambassador by subscribing to the mailing list. You will also be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

Please, could you translate the following article into Latvian?

Welcome to the Ido Wikipedia. Ido was first known as reformed Esperanto and was created in 1907 after seven years of deliberation by a committee of professors and linguists. You may notice that Ido looks somewhat like Esperanto, but with a number of differences including a complete lack of diacritical marks, the use of the letter 'q', along with many of the words themselves. If you are studying Ido and want to write for our Wikipedia, feel free! There are people here to correct your Ido should you make a mistake. Just use the Šablonas:Revizo tag whenever you think your article could use some grammatical revision. The main site for the Ido language is located here, Ido publications are located here, and the English Wikipedia article on Ido is located here. A complete list of sites in Ido on the internet is located here. Lastly, the main reasons for choosing Ido over the more well-known Esperanto are summed up in this article.

Labscouse/lapskaus/labskovs/labskojs/scouse/Labskaus in the Baltic languages

My apoligies for posing a question in English. The reason is that I do not understand any of the Baltic languages and I have a problem concerning your language.

The theme of labscouse with its counterparts in other languages: Labskaus (English)/ lapskaus (Norwegish) / labskovs (Dänish)/ lapskojs (Swedish) / Labskaus (German) / scouse (English) has an intereresting baltic twist. The english article claims: Latvian Labs kausis, meaning 'good bowl' or hotpot, or Lithuanian labas káuszas, meaning the same. This claim seems to originate in an article in Spiegel (Dabei gibt es zwei baltische Sprachen, in denen das scheinbare Kauderwelsch einen Sinn ergibt: Labs kausis heißt auf Lettisch "gute Schüssel", auf Litauisch sagt man dazu labas káuszas. ). This seems to have travelled world wide. Googling the words just reveals a whole lot of hits originating with Wikipedia articles and I was unable to find relevant dictionaries. The origin of the word in Scandinavia and Germany seems to be clear, the origin of the word is English. The origin of the English "lobscouse" is however unclear. It would be a very interesting story if lobscouse had anything to do with the Baltic countries.

About the etymology I becoming more and more confident that it is a very old loan from english, but other possibilities have to be eliminated. The DWDS states that it comes from English. It is most certainly a well travelled word as a lot of sailors expressions are. In English it is traced back to 1707 (Oxford English Dictionary is probably the most reliable source to English), and there is uncertainty about the earlier origin of the word. The Springer article seems to caracterize it's own examples as Kauderwelsch and given that the article has given rise to a theory qouted in english and other Wikipedias, it could well be a very good joke, but elimination is the clue and the Springer article could be very original research.

I have not been able to find much about the Baltic words on the net. Google claims that labas means good, but does not recognize labs. Google translates kausis to cup (latvian) will fight (lithuanian), káuszas to eye sockets (lithuanian). I was not really dissapointed, machine translation is more for fun if you know both languages and can enjoy the Kauderwelsch they sometimes produce. I would dearly like some proper translation of the baltic words.

- Are there any online dictionaries available?. The Springer article refers to the words - Labs kausis - and - labas káuszas- and I need a translation of this preferably with an internet link (hopefully reliable) and if possible with a translation to English or German. Google is not a reliable source and I can't very well qoute this forum eighter.

- I would also like to know if the phrases: - Labs kausis - and - labas káuszas - are connected, mean the same thing, have same etymology for instance. Thank you for your time and best wishes from --Stallo (aptarimas) 12:13, 28 kovo 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

In Lithuanian, "labas" is an archaic term for "good". In Latvian, "labs" also means "good". Latvian "kauss" means cup, "kausies" or similar means "will fight" (from lv verb "kauties"). I honestly don't know what lt "kauszas" means or even if it is a word but, if it is, it is likely a cognate. PiRSquared17 (aptarimas) 07:19, 17 vasario 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

Where can I find more information and ask questions? We have collected the main questions in an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

I want to be kept up to date about Wikidata To stay up-to-date on everything happening around Wikidata please subscribe to the newsletter that is delivered weekly to subscribed user’s talk pages.

Kodėl „perkelti“, o ne „pervardyti“?

Kodėl kiekviename Vikipedijos straipsnyje esanti straipsnio pervardijimo funkcija įvardyta „perkelti“, o ne „pervardyti“? Be to, ne „pervadinti“, o „pervardyti“ (http://dz.lki.lt/word/pervardyti/). (EEST)“). Hello!

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

[en] Change to section edit links

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Detailed information and a timeline is available on meta.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

VisualEditor and your Wikipedia

(Please translate this message) (Please translate this message in Lithuanian) thank you !!!!

Greetings,

The Wikimedia Foundation will soon turn on VisualEditor for all users, all the time on your Wikipedia. Right now your Wikipedia does not have any local documents on VisualEditor, and we hope that your community can change that. To find out about how you can help with translations visit the TranslationCentral for VisualEditor and read the easy instructions on bringing information to your Wikipedia. The User Guide and the FAQ are very important to have in your language.

We want to find out as much as we can from you about VisualEditor and how it helps your Wikipedia, and having local pages is a great way to start. We also encourage you to leave feedback on Mediawiki where the community can offer ideas, opinions, and point out bugs that may still exist in the software that need to be reported to Bugzilla. If you are able to speak for the concerns of others in English on MediaWiki or locally I encourage you to help your community to be represented in this process.

If you can help translate the user interface for VisualEditor to your language, you can help with that as well. Translatewiki has open tasks for translating VisualEditor. A direct link to translate the user interface is here. You can see how we are doing with those translations here. You need an account on Translatewiki to translate. This account is free and easy to create.

If we can help your community in any way with this process, please let me know and I will do my best to assist your Wikipedia with this |exciting development. You can contact me on my meta talk page or by email. You can also contact Patrick Earley for help with translations and documents on Mediawiki. We look forward to working with you to bring the VisualEditor experience to your Wikipedia! Keegan (WMF) (talk) 22:08, 30 liepos 2013 (EEST)[atsakyti]

Nepaisant to, kad jų pačių atliktas testas parodė, jog naujokai (tie patys, kuriems ši priemonė visų pirma skirta) su ja redaguoja mažiau (m:Research:VisualEditor's effect on newly registered editors/Results[26] – „Newcomers with VE enabled performed less wiki-work and spent less time editing overall. They were also marginally less likely than users with the wikitext editor to eventually save an edit.“)…

Hugo.arg (aptarimas) 21:06, 13 sausio 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

Introducting Beta Features

(Apologies for writing in English. Please translate if necessary)

We would like to let you know about Beta Features, a new program from the Wikimedia Foundation that lets you try out new features before they are released for everyone.

Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but in a way that's not disruptive.

Beta Features is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org. It will also be released on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki this Thursday, 7 November. Based on test results, the plan is to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013.

Here are the first features you can test this week:

Would you like to try out Beta Features now? After you log in on MediaWiki.org, a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences'. Click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more on the Beta Features page.

After you've tested Beta Features, please let the developers know what you think on this discussion page -- or report any bugs here on Bugzilla. You're also welcome to join this IRC office hours chat on Friday, 8 November at 18:30 UTC.

Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, they will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks. They are very grateful to all the community members who helped create this project — and look forward to many more productive collaborations in the future.

Enjoy, and don't forget to let developers know what you think!

Vandalizmo lygis, turbūt, tiesiogiai proporcingas enciklopedijos skaitomumui.

Knygų paieška man labai patogus dalykas rasti knygą, ypač angliškoje Vikipedijoje. Tačiau kodėl neina to padaryti lietuviškoje: Knygų paieška Turiu omenyje LIBIS katalogą, kodėl nėra padaryta, kad būtų galima pateikti užklausą ir ieškoti ten knygos, o tik atidaroma paieškos forma?--Zygiskr (aptarimas) 00:56, 19 gruodžio 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

VisualEditor coming to Lithuanian Wikipedia

Hello. (Please excuse the English. I would be grateful if you can translate this message!)

VisualEditor is coming to the Lithuanian Wikipedia; the chosen date is January 13th. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ and ]] to link to another page). It is already available and in use on some Wikipedia projects. Please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information.

When this software arrives, you will have the option to use it or to use the current wikitext editor. When you press "edit", you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "edit source". For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

It is important that editors on this wiki test the new editor before it is deployed. This would let us know about any serious issues specific to this Wikipedia before the rollout. To enable VisualEditor now, go to the "Beta tab", and check the box for VisualEditor. Please let us know if you find any problems. If you're willing and able, please report the issue in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. If you would prefer not, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org. If you notice major issues impacting your project after the rollout, we would appreciate it if you could let us know directly. Please leave a note on my talk page or, if it’s an emergency, like an unexpected bug causing widespread issues, reach out to James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention.

We would also appreciate help with translation with the pages about VisualEditor here and on MediaWiki.org, and its user interface. See VisualEditor TranslationCentral for general information. To translate the user interface, start by creating an account at TranslateWiki. Once your account request is approved, all you need to do is select your language from this list. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to "edit" on the other. Pressing "edit" will open an edit window where you can work.

The User Guide is another important document. To translate this, simply go to the MediaWiki.org page, and select "translate this page". Your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. If you want to help with translations and would like to talk about how, please leave a message for me on my talk page. I'm a community liaison for VE, so I'll be around to help this community. You can also use Notifications to ping me ;)

Thank you, and happy editing! --Elitre (WMF) (aptarimas) 01:18, 19 gruodžio 2013 (EET)[atsakyti]

VisualEditor office hours

Hello. I apologize for writing in English. Please help translate this message so that others in your community can read it. :)

The engineering department has already planned office hours in the next months to discuss VisualEditor. The first one will be held on January 15th, at 2300 UTC; the second will be held a week later, on January 22nd, at 2300 UTC. Please join as Product Manager James Forrester discusses VisualEditor and upcoming plans. Logs will be posted on Meta after each office hour completes. (If office hours are heavily attended, it can be difficult to get to all questions, but if you want to ask a question and cannot attend or do not speak English, please let us know your question here by the day before and a community liaison will present it among possible discussion topics).

We’ll post a reminder close to the date as well.

I'd also encourage you to engage in translations! Here are the links to complete the User Guide and the interface. There's still no main page for VE in Lithuanian, let's make this happen!

Reminder: VisualEditor is coming to this wiki on 2014-01-13

Hello, everyone. Again, please excuse my use of English: I would be very grateful if you would translate this message so everyone can read it.

VisualEditor is coming to this project on Monday, 13 January 2014, probably around 1900 UTC. VisualEditor is software in development to allow people to edit pages in MediaWiki without needing to learn wikitext syntax (like typing [[ and ]] to link to another page). It is already in use on more than 100 Wikipedia projects (please see mw:Help:VisualEditor/FAQ for more information).

On January 13th, you will have a choice between using VisualEditor or the current wikitext editor. When you press "Edit", you will get the new VisualEditor software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "Edit source". For more information about how to use VisualEditor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

We hope that this software will be useful to people in your community, and we really need your help to make it better! If you have time, please test VisualEditor now and let us know about any serious issues specific to this Wikipedia before the rollout. To test VisualEditor now, go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and select "VisualEditor". If you're willing and able, please report any issue in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product. Alternatively, please explain the issue you found on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org. If you notice major issues affecting this Wikipedia, please let us know directly. Please leave a note on my talk page or, if it’s an emergency, like an unexpected bug causing widespread issues, reach out to James Forrester, the Product Manager, at jforrester@wikimedia.org for immediate attention.

We also need help with translation, both of the pages about VisualEditor and of the user interface. See VisualEditor TranslationCentral for information on what needs to be translated.

  • To translate the user interface, you need an approved account at TranslateWiki. Then click here. This will give you a list of individual lines and paragraphs. The English original will be on one side, with the option to "edit" on the other. Pressing "edit" will open an edit window where you can work. According to the current statistics, the interface is currently 48% translated.
  • To translate the user guide, simply click here. If you want to help with translations and need help with it, please leave a message for me on my talk page. According to the current statistics, the user guide is currently 25% translated for this language. The translated (or mostly translated) user guide also needs to be copied over here, so editors here can find it.
  • There is still no presentation page for VE in this language. It is actually another very useful resource for Lithuanian editors, so if you want to create it, click here to start. When the translation is over, contents can be copied here at Vikipedija:VisualEditor to replace the current page.

Thank you for your help, and happy editing! -- Elitre (WMF) (aptarimas) 23:01, 7 sausio 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

PS: remember that next week you can also meet the VE team on IRC: just see my thread above for details and questions.

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

I apologize for this message being only in English. Please translate it if needed to help your community.

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

You are also welcome to join tomorrow's Office hours chat on IRC, this Thursday, January 16, at 19:00 UTC, if you would like to discuss this project with our team and other community members.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 08:47, 16 sausio 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

Ignatus (aptarimas) 00:11, 17 sausio 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

Photos taken of members of the European Parliament

Logo
Logo

From Monday 3 February to Thursday 6 February a group of about 50 Wikimedians were present in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take photos of members of the European Parliament. From about half of all members (766) of the parliament there have been photos taken during these days. Still a lot of them have to be uploaded to Commons. Also from members from Lithuania photos have been taken. A part from the pictures already have been added to articles on the various language Wikipedias, but many not. Please help us with that. If you add a photo in one language, it would be recommended to add the photo also to the articles in other languages.

The category with photos can be found on Commons here and includes also the other photos that have been taken by the group members during the project in Strasbourg.

On all the photos there is a special template to mark this project and gives more information about it. We would like to have this template translated into at least all the 24 official languages of the European Union and if possible also in other languages spoken in the EU. Can anyone translate this template from English (or German/French) to Lithuanian?

In the past weeks on several Wikipedias users started a project to write all missing articles at least from the country a language is mostly spoken in, but certainly also from all other countries of the European Union. All members of the European Parliament have an article on at least one language version of Wikipedia, but on a lot of language versions their articles are missing and still need to be written. This writing project currently happens on for example the Dutch Wikipedia.

The project page for having been at the European Parliament is at Commons at Commons:Wikipedians in European Parliament. The project is part of a larger project to take photos from members of national and regional parliaments. In the past years Wiki loves parliaments was for example active in the state parliaments in Germany. Which parliament shall be next?

Thanks for the help! Greetings - Romaine (aptarimas) 17:09, 9 vasario 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

More special character inserter feedback needed

Hi all, this is a request for feedback on the special character inserter. James Forrester, the Product Manager, has some specific questions for you! Please translate this to make sure more people in this community understand it.

The feature will help people who do not have access to a good character inserter on their hardware to be able to insert special characters. What we have right now, as you know, is just a very basic tool. It can be customized at each Wikipedia by creating a local page (so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants). But we want to think about ways it might be improved. For that, we'd appreciate your input. Please try out the character inserter and think about how it would best (or would not!) work for you.

Screenshot of TranslateWiki interface
The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.
Screenshot of Special Characters tool
This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

  • Should we just show the entire set of characters provided in the WikiEditor toolbar in the wikitext editor?
    • If we do, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should we do for users without enough space to display it?
  • Should there be a "priority" section for the ~10 characters that are needed most often? Is it OK if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited set?
    • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
    • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
  • Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
  • The toolbar already has too many options – how do we simplify it?

But we are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed.

Please leave your feedback on the Mediawiki feedback page or, if you'd prefer, leave it here.

Thank you again for your work with VisualEditor and for any feedback you can provide! --Elitre (WMF) (aptarimas) 16:51, 12 vasario 2014 (EET)[atsakyti]

Universal Language Selector will be enabled by default again on this wiki by 21 February 2014

On January 21 2014 the MediaWiki extension Universal Language Selector (ULS) was disabled on this wiki. A new preference was added for logged-in users to turn on ULS. This was done to prevent slow loading of pages due to ULS webfonts, a behaviour that had been observed by the Wikimedia Technical Operations team on some wikis.

We are now ready to enable ULS again. The temporary preference to enable ULS will be removed. A new checkbox has been added to the Language Panel to enable/disable font delivery. This will be unchecked by default for this wiki, but can be selected at any time by the users to enable webfonts. This is an interim solution while we improve the feature of webfonts delivery.

You can read the announcement and the development plan for more information. Apologies for writing this message only in English. Thank you. Runa

Changes to the default site typography coming soon

This week, the typography on Wikimedia sites will be updated for all readers and editors who use the default "Vector" skin. This change will involve new serif fonts for some headings, small tweaks to body content fonts, text size, text color, and spacing between elements. The schedule is:

  • April 1st: non-Wikipedia projects will see this change live
  • April 3rd: Wikipedias will see this change live

This change is very similar to the "Typography Update" Beta Feature that has been available on Wikimedia projects since November 2013. After several rounds of testing and with feedback from the community, this Beta Feature will be disabled and successful aspects enabled in the default site appearance. Users who are logged in may still choose to use another skin, or alter their personal CSS, if they prefer a different appearance. Local common CSS styles will also apply as normal, for issues with local styles and scripts that impact all users.

No one needs free knowledge in Esperanto

There is a current discussion on German Wikipedia on a decision of Asaf Bartov, Head of WMF Grants and Global South Partnerships, Wikimedia Foundation, who rejected a request for funding a proposal from wikipedians from eowiki one year ago with the explanation the existence, cultivation, and growth of the Esperanto Wikipedia does not advance our educational mission. Important VisualEditor announcement

Please help translate this message in your language. Thanks :)

Hi, everybody. As liaisons are spreading out to work on other Wikimedia Foundation products and VisualEditor has been active for some time, we are planning to make a few changes to the way liaisons support VisualEditor.

  • We are publishing a global newsletter (in English). Sign up at Meta! The bulletin will include major announcements and updates, so that you will see fewer posts and translation requests by us on this page. We are going to deliver the next issue here as soon as it is available; to receive the following ones as well, please add this page or your talk page (or both) to the delivery list. You can even volunteer to translate the newsletter locally.
  • We encourage you to leave feedback about VisualEditor on the relevant page at mediawiki.org, because that's the place the whole liaison team is going to monitor for centralized feedback from most wikis. We always appreciate community members' assistance! If you see VE-related enquiries on your Wikipedia that you can answer or that you can translate and post to mediawiki.org, that would be great!
  • We invite you to discuss VisualEditor's recent development and plans ahead during the next office hour on Monday, May 19th at 18:00 UTC with James Forrester (Product Manager). If you are not able to attend but have a question for James, you can leave your question at mediawiki.org or on my talk page by the day before, and I will try to get a response. We plan to continue these monthly sessions as long as there is community interest.
  • We remind you that the current ways to reach the Community Liaisons are listed at our respective user pages, and that a talk page message is always welcome and a good way to get/keep in touch.
Thanks for your attention! --User:Elitre (WMF) 17:51, 9 gegužės 2014 (EEST)[atsakyti]

Kur randasi San Marinas

Laba diena,

O, kur tada Andora????:)

Media Viewer allows readers of Wikimedia projects to have an enhanced view of files without having to visit the file page, but with more detail than a thumbnail. You can try Media Viewer out now by turning it on in your Beta Features. If you do not enjoy Media Viewer or if it interferes with your work after it is turned on you will be able to disable Media Viewer as well in your preferences. Using only UploadWizard for uploads

Wikimedia Commons logo

Hello! Sorry for writing in English. It was noted that on this wiki upload is not fully functional for users, who will experience a very difficult and/or illegal uploading. In fact, the licenses/copyright tags dropdown is empty, making it hard or impossible to comply with copyright requirements during upload itself.

Presumably, you don't have interest nor energies to have hundreds templates with the now required HTML, even less a local EDP. I propose to have

so that you can avoid local maintenance and all users can have a functioning, easy upload interface in their own language. All registered users can upload on Commons and existing files will not be affected.

All this will get done around 2014-07-03.

  1. If you disagree with the proposal, just remove your wiki from the list. Remember also to create MediaWiki:Licenses locally with any content (see a simple example), or uploads will be soon disabled anyway by MediaWiki itself (starting in version 1.24wmf11).
  2. To make the UploadWizard even better, please tell your experience and ideas on commons:Commons:Upload Wizard feedback.

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Multimedia team is happy to announce that Media Viewer was just released on this site today.

Media Viewer displays images in larger size when you click on their thumbnails, to provide a better viewing experience. Users can now view images faster and more clearly, without having to jump to separate pages – and its user interface is more intuitive, offering easy access to full-resolution images and information, with links to the file repository for editing. The tool has been tested extensively across all Wikimedia wikis over the past six months as a Beta Feature and has been released to the largest Wikipedias, all language Wikisources, and the English Wikivoyage already.

If you do not like this feature, you can easily turn it off by clicking on „Disable Media Viewer“ at the bottom of the screen, pulling up the information panel (or in your your preferences) whether you have an account or not. Learn more in this Media Viewer Help page.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments about Media Viewer. You are invited to share your feedback in this discussion on MediaWiki.org in any language, to help improve this feature. You are also welcome to take this quick survey in English, en français, o español.

We hope you enjoy Media Viewer. Many thanks to all the community members who helped make it possible. – Fabrice Florin (WMF) (talk) 00:54, 20 birželio 2014 (EEST)[atsakyti]
