Nigerijos himnas

Arise, O Compatriots (Kilkite, tėvynainiai) – Nigerijos valstybinis himnas. Patvirtintas 1978 m. Eilės yra žodžių ir frazių, paimtų iš penkių geriausių variantų, pateiktų nacionaliniam konkursui, derinys. Muziką žodžiams parašė Nigerijos policijos orkestras, kuriam vadovavo Benedict Elise Odiase.

Istorija

Nuo 1914 m. iki 1960 m. Nigerijos patriotine daina buvo britų himnas „Dieve, sergėk karalienę“. Po to, kai 1960 m. šalis iškovojo nepriklausomybę, nacionaliniu himnu tapo "Nigeria We Hail Thee", parašyta Lillian Jean Williams (žodžiai) ir Frances Benda (muzika), abu britų ekspatriantai. Per Nigerijos pilietinį karą, vykusi 1967–1970 m., kai Biafra bandė atsiskirti nuo Nigerijos, „Nigeria We Hail Thee“ buvo šalies himnu, o Biafros himnu buvo „Land of the Rising Sun“. Po karo, kuriame Nigerija laimėjo ir liko vientisa, Biafros himnas nebuvo naudojamas. 1978 m. organizuotas konkursas naujam valstybiniam himnui sukurti. Iš daugelio atsiųstų variantų atrinkti penki, kuriuos parašė John A. Ilechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, B. A. Ogunnaike, Sotu Omoigui ir P.O. Aderibighe. Šie žodžiai buvo sujungti, kad suformuoti tai, kuo dabar yra „Arise, O Compatriots“, Nigerijos valstybinis himnas. Tuo metu Nigerija buvo karinis režimas ir muzika himnui sukūrė Nigerijos policijos orkestras; tuo metu jam vadovavo Benedict Elide Odiase. Nuo tada „Arise, O Compatriots“ yra oficiali Nigerijos patriotinė daina.

Nigeria's call obey

Land of the rising sun, we love and cherish,

Beloved homeland of our brave heroes;

We must defend our lives or we shall perish,

We shall protect our hearts from all our foes;

But if the price is death for all we hold dear,

Then let us die without a shred of fear.

Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation,

Oh fatherland, this be our solemn pledge:

Defending thee shall be a dedication,

Spilling our blood we’ll count a privilege;

The waving standard which emboldens the free

Shall always be our flag of liberty.

We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal,

And through the crucible unscathed we’ll pass;

When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal,

We shall remember those who died in mass;

Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song

Of victory we scored o’er might and wrong.

Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall,

Guide all our movements lest we go astray;

Papročiai

Nigerijos valstybinis himnas paprastai atliekamas per svarbesnius įvykius, susijusius su nacionaliniu pasididžiavimu, pvz., per prezidento kalbą, svarbesnius sporto įvykius ir mokykloje, kur jis lydi Nigerijos valstybinę ištikimybės priesaiką.
